The young princess told Tatler magazine her “Granny” has an “air of magic” about her, in a revealing interview to mark her 18th birthday on March 23.

Eugenie said: “Granny is truly one of the most amazing women ever. She is also very funny. You can tell when she is happy, having all her family round at Christmas and watching them all laugh and having so much fun on Christmas Day. It just makes her very happy.

“All I can say is that she has this air of magic about her. And she is incredibly wise. What doesn’t she know?”

Eugenie – who appears on the front cover of the April issue of magazine in a flattering strapless purple gown – also insists she couldn’t wish for a closer relationship with her beloved mother Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and older sister Princess Beatrice.

She added: “Mummy, Bea and I call ourselves ‘the Tripod’ – they are my best friends in the world. Beatrice and I get on fantastically well, perhaps because we do and think different things. It’s quite funny how, like most sisters, we sometimes fight about clothes. I always take her clothes back to school, for instance, which she hates.

“Like all sisters, we have silly arguments about unimportant stuff, but we do love each other to death.”

The princess – whose parents Sarah and Prince Andrew split in 1992 and divorced in 1996 – admits she has inherited her father’s temper.

The royal, who is sixth-in-line to the throne, said: “I do have an occasional temper – I sort of inherited my dad’s short fuse. I am definitely not as polite as Beatrice, I have to say. I tell it as it is. I am shyer at first.

“Like, if we are at a party I will say to Beatrice as we go in, ‘Oh, you go first.’ But then, when we’re actually in, I am much louder and she is far more polite and solicitous. We’re chalk and cheese.”
