McFLY turn on the Regent Street Christmas lights this evening to mark the start of London’s Yuletide season.

“We’re really excited to be switching on the lights,” said Danny Jones, the band’s lead singer. “So many great people have done it in the past.”

He has a point. Previous switch-flickers include Kylie Minogue, Sly Stallone and Prince Charles.

The boy-band, famous for 5 Colours in Her Hair, are due to show up at 6pm on a temporary stage put up between New Burlington Street and Regent Street. They have a new single coming out, the official song for this year’s BBC Children in Need, the long-running charity telethon.

“Hopefully we can help encourage people to think of ideas to raise even more money this year,” said Jones.

The theme for the Regent Street lights this time around is Wish Upon a Star, with the famous shopping thoroughfare set to be turned into an earthbound galaxy of flickering constellations.

In the past, McFly have delighted fans by stripping off on stage, but, given the low temperature, it is thought unlikely even wishing on a star will persuade the fellas to disrobe. On the plus side, there is late-night shopping on Regent Street tonight.
