Dr Philip Zimbardo is a psychology professor at Stanford University, who decides to conduct a study on the relationship between military guards and prisoners. He constructs a mock prison in the basement of the psychology department building then pays male students $15 a day to play either prisoners or guards. Zimbardo and his team observe how the students’ behaviours change depending on their roles – the guards become physically and mentally abusive, exploiting the power that they wield.
