Ruth Wonderly approaches grizzled private detectives Sam Spade and Miles Archer to locate her missing sister. She claims her sibling is involved with a man named Floyd Thursby and Archer agrees to carry out late-night surveillance. He is murdered and Spade is informed of his friend's death. More troubling, Thursby is also murdered and the finger of suspicion points at Spade. The case becomes increasingly complicated when Spade comes into possession of a valuable black bird figurine.
