Rory MacNeil receives a devastating medical prognosis that will mean he might not outlive a member of a rival clan. He leaves his home on a Hebridean island for medical treatment in San Francisco, where he reunites awkwardly with his estranged son, Ian, a celebrated molecular sous chef. Ian's wife Emily is more welcoming and she is grateful when Rory takes an interest in his grandson Jamie and offers to take care of the child.
