Officer worker Kanji Watanabe has spent 30 thankless years doing his employer’s bidding, without a single day’s absence for sickness or holiday. Estranged from his unsympathetic son Mitsuo, Kanji has nothing of consequence to live for. When he is diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just a few short months, Kanji discovers a vital community project – the construction of a children’s playground – and invests all of his energy into seeing its completion. Kanji’s courage and determination in the face of death and bureaucratic red tape has a profound effect on his equally dispirited co-workers.
