The Pearl Harbor actor will take on the role of Charlie Babbitt – made famous on the big screen by Tom Cruise – in the West End.

Josh, 28, admits it is a lifelong dream of his to tread the boards in the UK capital’s theatre district.

He said: “It has always been my intent to work on the London stage. It was only when I read the complex character of Charlie Babbitt that I knew the time was right.”

British actor Adam Godley will co-star as his autistic brother Raymond, who was portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in the 1988 movie. Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his incredible performance.

The plot follows two brothers who meet again after their father dies and they embark on a cross-country trip, learning about each other along the way.

Rain Man will open at the Apollo Theatre in September.

Other Hollywood stars to appear on the London stage include Nicole Kidman – who caused a stir when she appeared naked in The Blue Room – Christian Slater, who enjoyed three stints as R.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and Ashlee Simpson, who wowed critics with her performance in Chicago.
