The Freaky Friday star claims locals are at fault for the blaze because they fail to respect nature and are in “ultimate denial” about the impact they have on the environment.

She said: “We live in southern California, we build houses where we shouldn’t build them, we’re living in the worst drought this country’s ever had and we pretend that we’re not and we water our lawns – talk about
ultimate denial.

“We’ve done this, we’ve created all of this. This isn’t an act of God, this is an act of man.”

The fires have so far devastated over 400 acres of land and forced many Hollywood stars to evacuate their homes.

Mel Gibson and Olivia Newton-John have had to leave their houses, while properties belonging to Jennifer Aniston, Pierce Brosnan, Sting, Robert Redford, Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette, Tom Hanks and Richard Gere are also said to be at risk.

Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in seven counties with US President George Bush describing the fire as a “major disaster”.

The cost of the fire damage is expected to well exceed USD1 billion.
