Guy Ritchie “pushed” for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows to be in 3-D.

The British director was keen for the sequel – starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law – to use innovative forms of camera work but after a meeting with studio Warner Bros. it was decided it should be avoided.

He said: “I am a fan of 3-D movies and I am a bit of a film geek. Actually, I did try to push this for 3-D, but the main reticence was there was a lot of 3-D coming out and it felt almost tired at the time when we were embarking on this.

“I am a fan of anything innovative but at the time it just didn’t feel like that. If we would have gone a bit earlier I think I would have pushed harder for it.”

Downey Jr. admits he was glad the picture did not utilise 3-D because it can be cumbersome when trying to shoot improvised scenes.

He said: “When you are shooting in 3-D you can’t have that swiftness of movement. Sometimes Guy would be doing really, really innovative shots and it kind of leans on being able to guerrilla style here and there.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens this Friday, 16 December.
