The prestigious event was due to take place at California’s Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday (13.01.08), but has now been axed because of the Hollywood writers’ strike.

The winners will now be announced during a one-hour news conference broadcast on US channel NBC News.

The decision comes after the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) said its members would boycott the ceremony in support of the two-month walkout by the Writers Guild of America.

Globe nominees George Clooney and Keira Knightley were among a host of stars who declared they would not be prepared to cross the writers’ picket line to attend.

Faced with the prospect of a host of celebrity no-shows, NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to scrap the annual glitzy ceremony, which traditionally kicks-off the awards season.

Jorge Camara – president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the company that owns the Globes – said: “We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favourite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television.

“We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year’s Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled.”

Other Golden Globe nominees include Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp and Daniel Day-Lewis.
