Cheryl Cole skipped a birthday party for fellow Girls Aloud Kimberley Walsh and Sarah Harding on Saturday – because she was in hospital with hubby Ashley. His brother’s near-death car smash was so bad it’s a “miracle” he’s alive, according to emergency services.

Straight after The X Factor, Cheryl headed to hospital, where 26-year-old Matthew Cole was in care. Ashley found out about the accident after his draw game against Newcastle Saturday, but he didn’t tell Cheryl until she filmed her show.
“Ashley was devastated and wanted to be at his brother’s side straight away,” a source told the Mirror.
“Matthew wasn’t allowed visitors. But they were so shaken they spent most of the night by the phone. Ashley and Matthew are extremely close He was his best man this summer.”
