The Womanizer singer – who did not attend the event in Liverpool, England, because she was performing a one-off concert with Madonna in the US – was awarded Act of 2008 and Album of the Year for Blackout.
Britney – whose new album Circus is out in December – accepted the gongs via a video message, urging the audience to “party hard”.
The double win follows the star’s triumph at the MTV Video Music Awards in September where she picked up three accolades.
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney – who is originally from Liverpool – accepted the Ultimate Legend award from his U2 frontman friend Bono.
Paul used his acceptance speech to thank the American people for electing the country’s first black President, Barack Obama.
Pink won Most Addictive Track for So What, which she performed on the night and started a pillow fight on stage with around 30 fans, sending feathers flying.
The show’s host Katy Perry – who won Best New Act – wowed the crowd when she rode a giant cherry lip balm onto the stage in reference to the lyric from her hit song I Kissed A Girl: “The taste of her cherry Chapstick”.
She shouted out to her Gym Class Heroes boyfriend Travis McCoy: “I must say I’ve seen bigger – hi baby.”
Former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona – who was recently accused of being drunk on air during an appearance on UK TV show This Morning – was booed when she arrived on stage to present an award.
A surprise Best Act Ever win came for 80s star Rick Astley after 25 million people were tricked into watching the video of Rick’s biggest single Never Gonna Give You Up, which reached number one in 16 countries in 1987.
The promo was posted under the title of several other popular music artists on video sharing website YouTube, and the prank became known as ‘Rickrolling.
30 Seconds to Mars – fronted by actor Jared Leto – won the Video Star award. The night also saw performances from Kid Rock, Beyonce, Kanye West, Estelle, Duffy and The Killers.
