The BBC One show – which cost £22 million to create – is in danger of only being on for one season after its latest viewing figures were two million below the minimum number executives were hoping for to justify the money they have spent on the series.

In contrast, rival series Britain’s Got Talent ended with 11.9 million viewers earlier this month.

An insider told the Daily Star: ”It feels like the show is imploding. We got off to such a great start and now it’s turned sour.

”At this rate we won’t have a show to bring back next year.”

Saturday night’s live episode was branded a ”complete shambles” by fans after a string of on-air errors, which saw judge Jessie J stop her live performance after complaining that her earpiece was not working.

Jessie was also criticised by fans on twitter after she posted a picture of herself and finalists Vince Kidd and Becky Hill on the social networking site two hours before the results show was due to air last night.

During the live show, will.i.am slammed fellow coach Danny O’Donoghue for the way he is mentoring singers in his team, and contestant Aleks Josh performed with his hands in his pockets leading to a number of criticisms on twitter about his attitude.

Former Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner wrote: ”Aleks typifies the know-it-all attitude of many young people.”

But Aleks missed out on a place in the semi-final along with Toni Warne, Cassius Henry and David Julien last night after failing to gain the public vote or the confidence of their coaches.
