Ruth Jones – who co-wrote the BBC series with actor James Corden – has announced plans for the show to be turned into a stage production after a Christmas special was axed this year.

She said: “We’d love to do Gavin and Stacey: The Musical. I know it is something James wants to do too.

“I saw Billy Elliot on stage the other day and I thought it would be something good to do. It’s something I would definitely be up for.”

The 45-year-old star – who plays Nessa in the sitcom – is planning to write a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special with James (Smithy), but she is disappointed they weren’t able to pen a one-off special in time for this year.

Ruth added to the Daily Star: “We will definitely be doing another episode of Gavin and Stacey.

“We wanted to do a Christmas special but it keeps getting moved back. I would have liked to have done it this year but I have a new 10-part series and James has just started a play [One Man Two Guvnors].

“He’s also just become a dad so we’ve been pretty busy. But James and I are very close and will keep in touch about a new show.”
