The actor – who is serving time in California’s Glendale City Jail for driving under the influence (DUI) while already on probation for another drink-driving offence – has received more than 100 letters a day since starting his sentence last Wednesday (05.12.07).
John Balian, spokesman for the Glendale City Jail, said: “The guy has been getting a ton of fan mail. Easily more than 100 letters a day. He certainly seems to have a lot of support out there.”
Sutherland – who has three stepchildren and one biological daughter from his two failed marriages – will be behind bars for Christmas and New Year, as well as his birthday on 21 December.
The 40-year-old star – who plays counter terrorist agent Jack Bauer in hit US TV show 24 – has reportedly been a “model prisoner”.
Balian said: “He’s not happy to be here, but you can tell from his demeanour that he’s sorry and takes responsibility for what he’s done. He’s a model prisoner.”
As a ‘worker inmate’ Sutherland’s duties have included folding laundry and serving meals to fellow inmates.
