American photographer Eugene Smith answers a call from Japanese translator Aileen to visit Minamata on the island of Kyushu to capture striking images with his Minolta camera of the mercury poisoning in coastal communities. The so-called Minamata disease is linked to a chemical company with strong ties to local government. As Smith gains the trust of victims and shares their stories with the world through his photographs, he sets himself up as a target for swift and brutal reprisals.
