The 23-year-old prince paid a visit to Cathays High School in Cardiff, much to the delight of the pupils.

Holly White, 12, cried with joy after meeting Harry and said: “He was so amazing. You’d have thought he was too posh and would say something like: ‘How do you do?’ but he wasn’t like that at all – he was just gorgeous.”

Harry also spoke to red-haired Matthew Taylor, telling the 12-year-old: “I’m ginger – gingers love gingers.”

The prince then visited the University Hospital of Wales, where he was handed a five-month-old baby by her mum.

Although at first reluctant to hold Lexi Hailstone, the prince eventually relaxed and joked with photographers, holding up the tot and saying: “It’s a girl” before pretending he wasn’t going to pass the child back to her mum, Natasha Martin.

The prince – a patron of the charity Dolen Cymru (Wales Lesotho Link) – also met doctors and nurses who had worked in Lesotho, the African region Harry visited in his gap year and set up the charity Sentable to work with orphans in the area.
