The married couple – who have a two-year-old daughter Suri together – are set to make their first on-screen appearance together in the film, which tells the story of an arrogant New York chef who is forced to cook in a school cafeteria.

Tom is being lined up for the role of the chef, while Katie will play a teacher or member of staff in the cafeteria, according to Chicago Sun Times columnist Bill Zwecker.

A source at Universal Pictures, who are in charge of the film which is being scripted by Definitely, Maybe writer Adam Brooks, refused to confirm the reports, adding: “That’s news to me!”

If the movie does go ahead, it won’t be the first time Tom will have acted alongside his real-life love interest.

Tom met future wife Nicole Kidman on the set of Days of Thunder in 1990. The pair later teamed up for Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut.

Tom also dated his Vanilla Sky co-star Penelope Cruz.
