The former Friends star will play a talk show host in dark comedy The End of Steve, which he is also writing and co-producing.
Zack Van Amburg, co-president at Sony Pictures Television, which is producing the pilot for US channel Showtime, said: “This role will show fans that he can be not only funny but also reach to some dark places. It will be a departure from the way the US thinks of Matthew. This is the beginning of a really exciting journey.”
Matthew – who will co-produce the show with Peter Tolan, the co-creator of hit US series ‘Rescue Me’ – is best known for his role as the sarcastic Chandler Bing in ‘Friends’, which ended in 2004 after 10 seasons.
His last regular TV role was in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip during the 2006 to 2007 season.
Last year, it was revealed Matthew will star alongside High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron in a new comedy.
Matthew will play a man who gets the chance to relive his school years when he wakes up one morning to discover he is a teenager again, in Seventeen Again.
