The singer’s lawyer Sean Curran said: “Pete obviously didn’t want to go to prison but he was philosophical. He’s not an angel. He accepts the order of the court. He’ll be back.”

Doherty, the ex-lover of supermodel Kate Moss, had been ordered to take regular drug tests as part of a four-month sentence, which had been suspended for two years, after he admitted possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis.

He breached his probation conditions by missing two appointments, turning up late and being abusive to staff.

During the hearing, District Judge Davinder Lachhar slammed Doherty’s “unacceptable behaviour”.

His concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 26 has now been cancelled, although good behaviour could half the sentence.

His record company EMI said the concert would be rescheduled.

A spokesman said: “Peter would like to offer sincerest apologies to fans.”

It is not the first time Doherty has been sent to prison.

In 2003, he was sentenced to six months for breaking into the home of his former Libertines bandmate Carl Barat.

He has since been remanded in custody over his drug abuse but has managed to avoid jail.
