The star signed up to play waitress Krystal but was left unimpressed when she discovered she would have to don a prosthetic nose, bushy eyebrows and braided hairstyle for the part.
A film insider told the New York Daily News: “Mariah is the nicest person to work with – everyone loves her. But she was uncomfortable at being made ugly for the part.
“When she saw the nose, she called her people and decided against it. She wasn’t a diva about it, but she did seem very insecure about her appearance.”
In the film, directed by Aaron Woodley, Mariah’s character Krystal sets off with her two brothers, Carter and Ellis, in search of their father. A source close to producer Lee Daniels denied Mariah had been asked to wear an unattractive fake nose.
Nicole Kidman donned a prosthetic nose to play Virginia Woolf in 2002’s The Hours – a role which earned her the Best Actress Oscar at the 2003 Academy Awards ceremony.
