The Queen attended a cabinet meeting for the first time today (18.12.12) and made sure she was protected from any icy political blasts by covering herself in a nice blanket.

The 86-year-old royal sat beside Prime Minister David Cameron at the weekly ministerial get-together in Downing Street, where she assumed the role of royal observer.

It was the first time a monarch had attended cabinet since Queen Victoria’s reign.

While officially the Queen is head of state, her involvement in day-to-day political decisions is largely formal, but she was nevertheless expected to speak during the meeting.

To commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the cabinet were due to present Her Majesty with a gift which could presumably double up as a Christmas present to save tax-payers cash.
