Fourteen-year-old Esther lives with her Jewish parents in 1942 Trondheim under Nazi occupation. Soldiers arrive in the middle of the night and arrest Esther's father. The teenager evades capture and follows 16-year-old Aksel back to his parent's farm. There are frequent patrols by German soldiers and the repercussions for Aksel would be grave if Esther is discovered. The plucky teenager decides to hide in plain sight transforming herself into a boy.
