Schizophrenic Ray is released from psychiatric hospital into the care of his loving brother Pete, who works night and day making a go of his cafe-cum-bistro. At first, Ray agrees to work in the kitchens with his brother, but he is soon distracted by emotionally damaged Scottish lass Laura, who has recently split from her abusive boyfriend. Eloping with Laura to the coast, Ray forgets to take his medication and is soon slipping down the slope towards emotional destruction, with Pete and Laura's love the only thing stopping him from imploding.
