In a dystopian future, genetic clones are bred and nurtured to provide vital organs for humans. Three such clones – Ruth, Tommy and Kathy – grow up together at Hailsham boarding school where headmistress Miss Emily and teacher Miss Lucy encourage their artistic sensibilities. Kathy keeps a watchful eye on Tommy, who is weak compared to the other boys, but her affections are thwarted when Ruth pairs off with the lad.
