Miguel grows up in Lisbon in the care of his grandmother. He knows very little about his parentage and when he asks about his father, the grandmother reveals only that he was something of a scoundrel. When Miguel unexpectedly comes into enough money to finance a trip, he travels to the Cape Verde islands in search of his old man. Far from home off the African coast, Miguel samples the local rum - grogue - to excess and gains a new perspective on the direction of his humdrum life.
