In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Communist Party of China, launched a forceful campaign against people designated as ‘rightists’ by condemning more than 3000 prisoners to labour camps on the edge of the Gobi Desert. The majority never left Jiabiangou. Documentary filmmaker Wang Bing has spent 10 years interviewing survivors, capturing their harrowing testimonies on camera. This 495-minute film brings together more than a dozen of these interviews.
