The comedian – who played headmaster Mr. Gilbert in the E4 hit – will appear in new Channel 4 show Man Down, which he has also written.

Davies will play the role of another teacher, Dan, who hates his job.

Nerys Evans, Channel 4’s comedy commissioning editor, said: “Greg is in more ways than one a giant of British comedy. He has managed to write a joyfully funny, laugh-out-loud script.

“We’re thrilled to be working with him on his first solo piece.”

Jon Thoday – who works at Avalon, which will produce the show – added: “We are very excited to be part of bringing Greg’s brilliant comic creation to Channel 4.”

As well as starring in a new show, Greg will also embark on a new national stand-up tour called The Back Of My Mum’s Head, which will draw on his own experience in the education system.

The tour kicks off in October and takes in venues such as the Hammersmith Apollo, for which you can buy tickets here.
