Middle-class teacher John Grant heads home to Sydney to visit his girlfriend for the Christmas school holidays. The journey involves a detour to the mining town of Bundanyabba, known as "The Yabba", where John will catch his flight to Sydney. In this remote township, the teacher meets policeman Jock Crawford, who gets John drunk and introduces him to the local gambling craze of two-up, which could provide John with enough money to move back to Sydney forever.
