Lianqing lives in Myanmar, across the border from Thailand, but she is determined to forge a better life by securing permanent employment in Bangkok and – eventually – a passport for the neighbouring country. She is crammed into a van with other hopefuls including Guo, who flirts with Lianqing and tries to persuade her to join him at a textile factory, which employs illegal immigrants without question. Instead, she ploughs her own path, with emotional support from a flatmate called Cai.
