Inspired by the best-selling book The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett, Katharine Round’s thought-provoking documentary explores how economic division has created social division over the past 40 years. This story of rich and poor unfolds through the real-life stories of seven individuals in the UK and America, who dream of a better life and a bigger bank balance. Among them are a Wall Street psychologist called Alden, a booze-fuelled Glaswegian rapper called Darren and a carer in Newcastle called Rochelle. The film includes contributions from Margaret Thatcher’s former economic adviser Sir Alan Budd, economist Ha-Joon Chang, philosopher and historian Noam Chomsky and historian Sir Max Hastings.
