Fourteen-year-old Pio Amato is desperate to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Cosimo and mimics his sibling’s behaviour by drinking and smoking. By virtue of his age, Pio is one of the few members of his family who is allowed to move freely between the regions’ warring factions. When Cosimo vanishes without trace and his family lacks a strong male presence to take charge of day-to-day activities, Pio proudly steps forward to prove he is ready to become a man and defend his clan.
