The lord of the Beast Kingdom prepares to retire and must find a worthy successor. He names two potential heirs: Iozen and lazy loner Kumatetsu. The lord dispatches Kumatetsu on a quest to find a disciple in the hope that this will inspire the beast to greatness ahead of the duel of succession. Flanked by a companion Tatara, Kumatetsu visits the mortal realm and encounters a nine-year-old orphan called Ren, who has recently lost his mother and now lives on the streets.
