Eighteen-year-old dreamer Joy runs away from home with her no-good thief boyfriend, Tom. They eventually marry and raise a son called Johnny but Tom’s larcenous exploits land him a four-year prison sentence. Unable to support herself as a single parent, Joy initially moves in with her prostitute aunt Emm then seeks refuge with Tom’s mate Dave. He proves a kind and loving father figure to Johnny and sparks romance with Joy.
