Born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia, Desmond Doss almost kills his brother Hal when they are young. The traumatic episode has a profound effect on Desmond, who takes up a vow of pacifism, even when he enrols in the US Army. He intends to serve as a medic and follow the lead of his nurse girlfriend, Dorothy Schutte. However, he is ushered into combat training under Sergeant Howell and instantly makes enemies of the rest of the platoon by refusing to carry a gun.
