Michelle is involved in a car accident and she regains consciousness in an underground bunker, at the mercy of a survivalist called Howard Stambler. He tells Michelle that he saved her life and also rescued his neighbour Emmett shortly before a devastating global chemical attack rendered the surface of the Earth uninhabitable. They must remain in the airtight bunker, without any telephone signal or way to contact the outside world, until the air is breathable again.
